Man on the Street is Greg Kristapovich
“Have YOU ever found something interesting or unusual in a thrift shop? (asked in Angels Camp)
“The good things I find are probably good according to me; not so much somebody else. Today, I found this “Jug Head” comic book for the kids. I get the Readers’ Digest “Great Biographies”! It’s also fun to have the kids come in. It’s an inexpensive way to keep them occupied, and get them things! They like to find new puzzles and stuff! I don’t do the ‘antique stuff’. I do the more practical stuff. We have eight kids: six boys, two girls, age 7 to 21. Right now, there are three in college, three in high school, two in elementary. When you have a big family, this is the best place to be!” – Cassandra Scott, Angels Camp, (homemaker)
“I usually don’t find unusual things in thrift stores. I typically find nice, used jackets and good, used dishes; every once in a while, a small piece of furniture: a chair, maybe, or a table. That’s what I find whenever I need to take stuff in to donate; and then I take a look around. And I see people on television who find pretty jewelry that’s worth money. Or, they’ll find an old painting or an old book. But I haven’t done that yet. The book I find is only worth the quarter I paid for it.” – Beth Robello, San Andreas, (bookstore shelf stocker/filer)
“I found an old galvanized mop bucket! I always find good stuff at Good Stuff! I find everything from antique dishes to stained glass windows! There’s always a little bit of something good somewhere. My six year-old son is a ‘Goodwill shopper’! He knows when Goodwill closes, ‘cause that’s his favorite toy store! He can go in there with 50 cents and come out with a toy! Funny thing is, we were having a discussion in the car. I asked him when ToysRus closes; when Wal-Mart closes; when Home Depot closes. He couldn’t tell me. But he could tell me when Goodwill closes! – Joe Pasic, Pilot Hill, (propane plant manager)
“I buy the necessary, and I find very good things: baby clothes, toys, books, clothes for myself. blankets, towels, washcloths, dishes…! I had been picking up teacups for my daughter, who’s wanted to open a teahouse. But, she’s got so many teacups now, she goes, ‘Mom, don’t get anymore!’ I was really excited when I found a china hutch, for my granddaughter’s teacups! She’s two, and has tea parties with grandpa! I collect perfume bottles, thimbles and teacups. But lately, teacups are too expensive. I’m a cheap person. I know you’re going to print this, but most people see me in thrift shops – so, they know.” –Peggy Linsley, Angels Camp, (housewife/grandmother)
“I shopped in a thrift shop – a long time ago. I usually drop stuff off at the thrift stores. I get rid of stuff. I don’t need any more stuff! Every time I go to my mother’s in Stockton, I come home with a truckload of stuff! ‘Here son, here’s some more stuff for you!’” – Kim Schroeder, Murphys, (auto restoration)
