Man on the Street by Greg Kristapovich
“Are YOU ready for summer?”
(asked in Twain Harte)
“Yeah, when it gets here, but it still feels like spring. The weather’s mellow, you know, mid- temperatures. Nights are cool. It’s not really that hot. But when it does get hot, I go to Basin Creek in Tuolumne City! They got barbeques and picnic tables. I go down there and swim and chill out. In summer, I also like to go hiking and camping at Melones, or (Calaveras) Big Trees State Park!” – Josh Jones, Tuolumne City, (restaurant kitchen manager)
“I am very, very ready for summer! Probably more ready than I usually am. We opened Twain Harte Lake on Memorial Day, which was right early – and now I’m really ready for some nice warm weather! It’s been too cold! When it does get hot, I do have air conditioning, and also we have a small pool that I’m able to use on my children’s properties. But I like sitting at the Lake and reading, and enjoying the company of my grandson and my daughter, and my son-in-law. So, you know, summer’s great! Love it!” – Norma Stewart, Twain Harte, (The Lake’s “gatehouse lady”)
“Yes, I am ready for summer! Yeah, totally ready! Summers like my favorite time of the year; and I also really like hot weather! When it’s really hot, it’s still O.K. I mean, I have a pool in the backyard; so if I get warm, I can just hop in and cool myself off. In summer, I also like to ride my bike around or skateboard everywhere! “ – Zeth Zakarian, Sonora, (9th grade student)
“Yeah, ‘cause there’s no school! I do like “summer basketball”! It’s a county league, for summer. When it gets really hot, I just stay inside and watch TV. Also, in summer, I like to play guitar and golf and basketball. But if I had to pick one, it’d probably be basketball. I play point guard! I do like to play miniature golf. I like making ‘holes in one’! But I just like to mess around, just trying to make (the shots). It’s really fun!” – Bella Marshall, Broomfield, CO, (6th grade student)
“As long as it’s not over 80 degrees. So far, it’s been Heaven! When it does get hot, I just turn down the hot tub and stay in there, or stay in the house where it’s air-conditioned. In the summer, I like ‘Music in the Park’! (In Twain Harte’s Eproson Park.) I go every week! I’ve gone for five years! I enjoy seeing the Corvairs! They play ‘50s and ‘60s music. They were here last year and the year before. And I’m hoping to see them again this year!” – Lynn Blake, Tuolumne City, (retired cashier)
