“Isn’t this an impressive turnout for a Sunday morning!” exclaimed Rohn Mein, “The Demo Guy” from the Twain Harte Market, and now Daffodil Planting Event Coordinator. By 9:10 a.m., about three people had showed up to help plant daffodil bulbs along the road, at the west entrance of Twain Harte. However, within a half-hour, the planting crew had grown to 46! “It’s like Field of Dreams,” Rohn explained. “If you have a project, they will come! Twain Harte people never let you down! They always come through for you!” The Avellano Family (Pictured below), was enthusiastically involved in the project, too: Husband, Manuel; Wife, Ocean; 3 year-old Lainey – who did some impressive planting; and even the newborn, Liliona helped. She oversaw the project from her stroller! The bulbs were placed into large pizza-sized holes, about six inches deep; 17 bulbs to a hole. The holes were approximately three feet apart. “The fact that it rained last week, and made the soil nice and loose; and the fact that it is a beautiful day certainly helps! We have another partner up above, I think.” 3,150 bulbs were planted! But there was a certain amount of planning for this event. “Last Thanksgiving weekend, Julie and I came out with a “test planting” of a hundred bulbs. They came up beautifully! So, now that we know that they will grow here; that there’s a ‘built-in anti-freeze’ in the bulbs; and that they’re toxic to deer, we decided to go through with this project! We started raising money in the spring, and whatever funds we raised, the homeowners matched! Then, we went to Ironstone, hooked up with Hans from Holland and got to piggy-back onto their (Ironstone’s) order! So we got a volume discount, with really inexpensive shipping charges! I’d also like to thank The Rock Restaurant (of Twain Harte) for providing the coffee and coffee cake for the crew! Also, Twain Harte Market, which granted me a special discount on whatever supplies I needed. They’ve been very supportive of this project!
